Review: Nokia 6110 Navigator

Always wanted to try out how efficient with the use of GPS navigation device. But most of the GPS navigator is not really that portable enough to be carried along with you. (Well.. I know garmin has nuvi 200, and now 200w.. still it’s not that sleek enough to hide inside your pants pocket)

Nokia has been extensively trying its best to shine the s60 symbian platform (which I think it’s a good thing, but getting near to stuck at bottleneck now, no doubt it’s running on FP1, but still hope the new version would have more improvement over this v9.1)

left view (usb port, microSD slot, quick key)

At a glance, the Nokia 6110 navigator is somehow quite compact (but abit thick… well nothing much to complaint as it carries GPS module inside together with HSDPA, 3G and EDGE gsm module). The screen color is vivid and brightness is good, resoluting at 240×320 pixels on a 2.2″ screen size. The screen is just brilliant… fine and sharp! When ‘unslide’ you have the common function keys around the bottom of the screen (normal s60 function keys found here), but when it’s ‘slided’, a numeric keypad is facilitating your call dialing pleasure.

Builds
Finishing is simply nice and simple. Piano black finishing (or the pearl white on the other version) with some metal detailing. Making the phone looks somehow executive with a little grand :) The sliding mechanism is by far better than the one found in N series flagship, N95. Comparable to a samsung here. Well done for Nokia.

GPS
Comparing about the GPS receiver, Nokia 6110 navigator lock the GPS satellite signals at very reasonably speed. Less than 30 secs, no joke.. and you get your position locked! With the inbuilt route66 map guide, everything can be setup in a breeze, simply key in the location name to set the A and B point and you are set to navigate with the phone. But, due the the map information is kinda lacks in my country (Malaysia), I uploaded Nokia Map, which seems to be working just nice with more updated road maps.

Sound
Sound Playback is definitely a big plus for 6110 navigator. It has stereo speaker built in, extremely loud and clear (but please, don’t overboost the volume…), with me I only have iPhone, Nokia E61i and SE P1i to do comparison, it wins all hand down. The loudest phone I’ve used in my phone changelog. :) W810 is loud, but this one is louder.

Conclusion:
For less than USD400, if you would like to have a HSDPA smartphone with GPS support, look no further. This is the one you should carry around, it’s compact and good to say that, you can use it during your trip to other countries, searching good foods, restaurents, malls and etc in other countries? All these won’t be an issue at all with the assist of Nokia 6110 navigator.

Pro:
- Cheaper than a GPS navigator (non-phone)
- Support AGPS (faster position lock-in) with the assist of fast connectivity (ie: GPRS,EDGE,3G or HSDPA)
- Compact and solid
- Crisp screen and Loud speaker

Con:
- Battery does not last 1 days with GPS on for 3-4 hours
- Camera door abit stiff to open and close
- No wifi

For this price tag, I wouldn’t complaint much. Overall, it’s a great phone with good functionality.
