Wait no more, M600i is here!

Ok… normally I don’t do this… this time.. exception (due to the boxset design factor).

The Box Opening Ritual…

m600i-1.jpg

very simple and unique box design.

m600i-2.jpg

Open up: see the placement of the phone and the tray design. lovely!

m600i-3.jpg

okay, the cheapskate part of SE. only charger, data cable and handfree kit supplied. No cradle… no screen cleaning clothe (like in p910i.. hey come on.. SE.. you can do better than this rite?)

m600i-4.jpg

forgot to mention.. some manuals and a CD were given too. but still… stingy.

m600i.jpg
very apple’s design approach.. used by SE this time. the keypad is greenish illuminated.. but some how.. the color looks like blue under most of the lightings environment.

Before getting this M600i, I’ve been amused by someone saying that the M600i comes with stereo speakers (built-in) and the speaker is located under the antenna cover. Muaahhaha.. to clear those innocent fella’s doubts, here is the close-up photo on the speaker (the bluey net thingy).. see the speaker?

m600i_spk.jpg

Well.. another way to test it is to pump up the volume to the max, and use your finger touch/press/hold the speaker area, u will feel the vibration of the speaker, and it comes from the blue netting area NOT the antenna cover area. Hence, very very unlikely(.. or r u stupid?), the sound is transmitted by going through a ‘tunnel’ to output the sound to the blue-netting thing.

Music Playback : M600i vs E61
Before getting this M600i, i was surprised also… people commenting the speaker from M600i is marvelous! Well… I’m here to clear another doubt. Comparing to Nokia E61, the speaker in M600i is just nothing to brag about.

m600-7.jpg

A simple test performed by me. Transmitted the same AAC (64kbits) file by Kazumasa Oda – まっ白 (TBS系ドラマ「それは、突然、嵐のように…」主題歌) from my E61 to M600i via bluetooth… bluetooth transmission work pretty well and fast too. Okay, here’s the focus point, i pumped up the volume to max on M600i… while E61 is at 70% on volume. E61 was loud.. and clear, while M600i… music playback was distorted here and there, weird that.. the volume was fluctuating during the playback. and seems lack of something to amplify the music.. very dull.. (like the music being played inside the box).

WAP/GPRS/MMS/Internet Settings
Configurating telco’s WAP/GPRS/MMS connections is troublesome. No preset settings come by default, you either go to SE’s website for the settings wizard, or key in everything manually. Unlike E61 (even 9300 and 6230i), all telco settings have been preset with it, just insert your SIM card and voila, the phone will automatically select the respective setting without you knowing it.
Enough for this time.. I guess… will look into the software part later.

Firmware checked on my unit is R4A002 (latest version)

  1. hey, nice comparison! so, did you finally choose the m600i over the E61?

im currently in the same dilemma and having a hard time choosing between the 2. since you’ve owned both, any advice on which is better (in general)?

basically, here are my concerns :
    - m600i is smaller and looks better
    - E61 has wifi
    - i heard m600i is buggy? and tests to hang/reset often?
    - E61 syncs with Mac while m600i does not, im a Mac user

any help would be appreciated! =)

    thanks much in advance!

  2. hey, another follow up quesiton. how’s the speed of the UI? i heard it’s slow. with the latest firmware, is it still that ‘slow’? thanks.

  3. hi Mandy,

given the choices of two, If you like features over outlook (design) get the E61 for sure, but if prefer otherwise get the M600i.

here are some pointers might help your purchase:

    on outlook (ID wise):

    • M600i is made of plastic, while E61 is made of plastic + magnesium alloy steel. (same material like Motorola V3)
    • E61 feel very solid and sturdy, M600i feel the same way too but if were to compare to E61.. still abit ‘plasticky’

    on software/features:

    • E61 is snappy little monster, available memory for user is around 60MB. While M600i only has around 17MB. wondering why..hmm.
    • Even with the latest firmware patched, M600i still abit laggy. very noticeable on the fade in/out pop up context menu. and the response of scroll wheel is very slow too. (the device seems under-power to perform all the rich media intensive UI) but the UI is very nicely done. All the fonts looks smooth with ‘ClearType’ effect.
    • Hang/reset issue.. i hv not encounter one on the m600i, but E61 freezes 2 times so far.. when i tried to accepting an incoming call.
    • about the sync issue with M600i and Mac.. I think a 3rd party software can get this job done pretty soon. Just while for a little while, cause the Symbian UIQ found in M600i is still ‘fresh’ :)
    • Writing method on M600i.. hmm.. if u used P910i before.. the writing method is abit different.. u got to write much more faster in M600i. and the virtual keypad icon is now placed on top of the screen instead of on the bottom right like it used to be in P900/P910i.
    • Calendar/Schedule management in M600i for me look more promising. E61′s calendar hmm.. too basic for me.

hope all these could assist your purchase. but, maybe u should try both out and see which one suit u best before making your decision?

  4. hey, thanks for the replies! it’s like a mini-review =) still, i haven’t decided at this point what to get.

btw, congrats on your baby! =)

    Some clarifications ,

Both SE M600 and E61 are having around 15 to 17 MB free RAM memory (execution memory) after start-up.

E61 storage (flash memory in C:\ i.e. internal) is around 50 to 60MB by default but that depends. Some applications came pre-installed in the internal memory.

M600 also has around 60MB of storage in the internal memory (flash) but SE included some demo files in it, some applications (golf) and multimedia files like ringtones, MMS templates, icons, etc and all these filled up the storage memory in C. If you remove all these files or move them to the external memory (M2), you can get more storage in the internal memory.

In Symbian, the operating memory (RAM) and the storage memory are separated. It’s like your PC where you have RAM (SDRAM, DDRAM etc) and the storage memory (aka hard-disk etc)

    For reference, read http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Why_the_penny-pinching_over_RAM.php

    Cheers!

Edited: Thanks for the head up! :) appreciate it. But still.. don’t quite understand why Symbian does not allow adjustment to be done like what is done in Window Mobile.. where the user can scroll the level to adjust the ‘Runtime Memory’ and ‘Storage Memory’ that fit their needs.

  6. i never own a symbian phone before.
but looking forward to get one.
    (E61 or M600i)

one question on both of this phone.
1)how’s the other language input method like? (chinese & if possible japanese as well)

    2) if there is not japanese input method, is there any software or application can i install into these phones?

thanks & have a great holiday ahead!!

  7. hi munhoo, sorry ya for this late reply. to answer your queries as below:

    1. for M600i at the moment no chinese/japanese input yet, but there’s a hack to replace the system fonts to display chinese and japanese characters. (no input). for E61, yes u can view and input chinese character but not japanese characters. (viewable but no input mtehod for jp yet as for my understanding)

    2. i’m not aware of any. sorry man, couldn’t help u on this :(
